STRENGTH OF MY WEAKNESS

I just went through a couple of weeks, that as my mother would say, “these are times that can try your very soul!”.  My family and I had spent days preparing for a Cat 5 plus storm to unleash on South Florida, and after weathering Hurricane Irma and experiencing only minimal effects to the great storm, there was a great sense of relief in me.  The week before, as the storm approached, I placed a lot of energy in preparing for the worst.  As a family, we stocked up, shuttered up, and fueled up.  We spent hundreds of dollars preparing for every scenario and reviewed our emergency plans over and over and over. So with the western shift of the forecasted approach and good preparation, the great storm caused us no lasting harm or damages. After cutting back downed trees, assisting our neighbors with clearing debris, and riding out a few days without electricity, we were no worse for wear compared to other regions who were not quite as fortunate. Needless to say, we were relieved.

However, I came to realize that what I needed protection from was not Irma.  Life was about to come at me very hard.  At least for me it was hard.  It appeared I was not as prepared for this onslaught as much as I had prepared for the wrath of Hurricane Irma.  I had not adhered to the counsel of St. Peter as He so clearly stressed in his letter to the church.

1 Peter 5:8-9

“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”

Now, right after the hurricane passed, I went into what I will call a spiritual slump. I am not too sure how I got there, but I was there.  For that week after the storm, during my unexpected vacation from teaching, oh yeah, and there was no church either, I was not in an “alert state of mind”.  Now, I am not saying that my absence from church or school is the reason for this slump, just saying that this is when it happened.  it seems that I took a vacation from the vigilant man the Lord has called me to be.  That is a priest in God’s Holy Church.  

During this slump, I was hit with a series of news that made my faith shiver somewhat.  I received news of the passing of a dear friend.  Then without warning, my uncle who I had been caring for, who was up in years, but was not expected to be stricken, had a brain aneurysm and passed a few days after. Then to exacerbate the piling on of these unexpected bad news, one of my business venture went south, fast! Now, I have to make it clear; all these happenings were not due to my spiritual slump. But my ability to deal with them at first acknowledgment was at a diminished level because my spiritual state of being was at a diminished level.  Needless to say, I was shaken, and despair was at my doorstep threatening to break the door down.  It didn’t help that I was also slowly recovering from a medical challenge myself. Now, as a servant of the most Holy God, why would I be surprised that these things would come my way?  Especially when I am at my lowest? The only surprise here is, that I was surprised that such things had happened.

2 Corinthians 6:3-10

Rather, as servants of God, we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.”

As Christians, we will face trial and tribulations, and in most parts of the world, you can add persecution to the wretched mix. There is no getting around trials, strife and conflicts on this side of eternity.  In most cases, trials and tribulations will strike when least expected, sometimes like a 350 pound blind-sided sack, not that I know what that feels like since I never played football. But I sure can imagine the impact!  Sickness, death, and loss of income usually do not make appointments with you.  They will creep up on you like a thief in the night or a blitzing linebacker on your blindside.  The lack of preparation for such suddenness can cause you your sanity, possessions and security. In other words you will often end up fumbling the ball. This is so because we exist in a fallen and broken world.  As Christians, even though through Christ, spiritually, we are not of this world, (John 17:14-26), the reality is that we exist physically in this world, therefore we are subjected to the physical ills and trials of this world.


In spite of my lack of stolid faithfulness, the Lord remained faithful.  After some self-pity and a pitiful, depressive disposition, I recall during a period of prayer, my conscience began to question my motives and my approach to prayer. I realized that my prayer wasn’t with a right mind.  To be more clear, it was about my lack of spirituality and how I approached the Throne of Grace. It was as if I was saying to the Lord, “This has to be fixed, this way and right now”. There was even one particular morning, after some time spent in prayer, the business situation even went even further south.  I remembered saying to myself, “Why Lord? Did I not earnestly pray this morning?” My weakness was on display right there in front of me.  Who am I that I should boast, that I should walk in pride? Shouldn’t I be more in tune with my weakness as unto the things of Christ? (Isaiah 40:32)  As I corrected my error in thinking and subjected myself under the awesome reality of Christ’s saving grace, my approach to the Throne of Grace in humility and in sincere prayer, I was literally altered to a submissive attitude unto Christ. In the midst of all this, I was reminded of this prayer by Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane just before He was betrayed:

Mark 14:35-36
“Going a little farther, He fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from Him. “Abba, Father,” He said,“everything is possible for You. Take this cup from Me. Yet not what I will, but what You will.””

Now just consider this for a moment.  Here is the Son of God, perfect in every way and without sin.  This Man who is God Himself, crying out to His Father in total submission and humility.  I stopped to think, I, who am a sinner and wicked in many ways, how much more should I prostrate myself before the Lord knowing that my sins are numerous. Shouldn’t I have expected even greater consequences?  Even so, I  know that  my Redeemer lives and His amazing grace is sufficient for me.

Psalm 121:1-8

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip—He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.


As I approached the Lord in true prayer, there was a significant difference as to my attitude in how I faced these unfortunate life issues.  The issues did not disappear, nor were they made easier. On the contrary, the business crisis was beginning to seem as though it would get worse, and in some way it did. The situation seemed hopeless.  However, my Lord, whose grace is sufficient for me and who is my help in time of need, strengthened my resolve to face these things.  To underline Christ’s amazing love even more, He used the funeral of my friend, an amazing woman of God, to testify the power of faith and give strength to my soul.  This saint had demonstrated such amazing faith in the face of death, that the celebrant of her homegoing service was moved to present a powerful sermon simply by substituting the writings she had penned over the months leading to her death. It is awesome how God can use such a solemn occasion to uplift the downcast. This too was also so timely, as it prepared me to absorb the sad news of the unexpected passing of an aunt living out of town a few days later. With all this, I know that no matter my circumstances, my Lord is still on His Throne.

2 Corinthians 12:9   

But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Writing this article, I know the Lord was exposing a weakness in me. Let me say this, accepting weakness is not what most males are willing to admit.  Your know, I was a man with many flaws and certainly fell short of the glory of God.  Even so, I am now ordained into the priesthood, a man of the cloth, and well, this only further exposed how great my flaws are and how much more I am reliant on the grace of Christ, just to get through each hour of the day as a servant of His Kingdom.  As I go from day to day, and seek to do His will in service of His kingdom, I realize that none of it can even be attempted in my own strength and will.  If I am going to do the will of Christ according to His calling on my life, I have to die to self so that His power may rest completely on me. I have come to understand that our weaknesses are for our benefit, because oftentimes, it is through our weakness that the glory and strength of Christ are manifested in us.  

2 Corinthians 12:10

“That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

Now, when the Apostle Paul wrote here that he delights in the difficulties that come his way, he did not say that he is delighted that these thorns of social ills are plaguing him.  What Apostle Paul is saying, is that when theses things happens, he delights in the strength of Christ, in whom all things are possible.  This should be the reality of every Christian: Knowing that it is when we are weak that Christ is strong!  This is where I wasn’t when these difficult circumstance arose.  At times, we get complacent and drift out into the monotony of routine and wiles of this world. When trials come, we are unprepared and jump into panic trying to swim out of it.  This manner of panic praying is like a swimmer fighting against rip currents; we just find ourselves being dragged out into deeper water and sinking fast.  As the experts would advise us, to avoid the rip current, we should first calm down, and don’t fight. Remain steadfast and firm, so the waves do not suck us under. Ride the waves and swim horizontal to the shore. You will endure the threatening current for a while, but eventually there will be a breakthrough and clear path back to the shore.  So it is when we are faced with the difficulties of life, especially the unexpected ones.  Don’t fight against it with your own might and in your own strength. Seek the hand of God in prayer. He will guide you along the path of least resistance until there is an opening to pull yourself out of it.  Word to the wise, I didn’t say pray and do nothing.  The Lord will guide you along, not carry you.

Isaiah 40:28-31

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one  can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even  youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

There is a song entitled, “What a Beautiful Name.” One of my favourite lines: “My sin was great, Your love was greater”.  How reassuring are these words. No matter how great your sins, no matter how great your trials, no matter how great your despair, His love is greater. And it is bigger. And it is always available…waiting for you to claim it.

Brainwashed Generation

As Christians, we need to protect ourselves from the evil things of the world. It is easy to say when these things are clearly evil, but we are often fooled by the things that are masked by “what we like”.

We are brainwashed by our movies and our music no matter how much we say that we can detect it’s evil. We have become numb to profanity, violence, and sexual immorality and these factors of “entertainment” has contributed to that. In this time, music, movies, and social media take up a great deal of our time; spending large amounts of time on anything WILL have an impact. It’s sad to see that a large amount of famous music that promotes immoral things are so willingly endorsed by many Christians. It is not a bad thing to listen to secular music; however, it is a bad thing to listen to immoral music.

Sometimes we are so caught up in our love of an artist’s talent that we are blind to negative impact he or she has on us. For example, Beyonce’s song “Drunk in Love” is a crowd favorite. Everybody knows that song. We’ve all sung it at some point. It’s catchy, the rhythm is nice, it talks explicitly about sex, but she has an amazing voice, right? It’s easy to ignore that third point; however, it is crucial that we don’t. We cannot deny that this song has had an impact on this society. You can even buy t-shirts and phones cases with these lyrics. Sadly, it was a negative impact. Another example, in Kanye West’s new album, he mentions a line about Taylor Swift: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex…I made that b**** famous.” Many people are defending Kanye! These people, including Christians, are saying that others are overreacting about the statement, because it was simply a joke. A disgusting comment like that is”okay” and “not that bad” because it was merely a joke.

These kind of inacceptable excuses are being made all because people like his artistry. We need to open our eyes to the what we don’t know is controlling our lives. We can hope all we want that we were are just enjoying the musical quality and not the lyrics, but we know that that is not the case. Clean versions of songs may remove the profanity but not the sexual immorality or violent behavior that the artist implied. How many of us still cringe at the sound of profanity as much as we did as children? Very few. This is because we are used to hearing it so much, even if we aren’t the ones using them. This proves how much we are affected by the things around us. It is so important that we ask God to give us wisdom and a spirit of discernment. We need to pray for ourselves and for our brothers and sisters in Christ that we are not fooled and led astray. We must also pray for our nation and those who aren’t Christians that God will open their eyes and use us to make a difference in their lives and lead them to Jesus.

I think about that song that many us Christians learned as children: ” Be careful little eyes what you see…because little ears what you hear”. It’s something we must live by.

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” -Phil 4:8

Imagine…No Abortion

I can only imagine, truly imagine if this much outcry and emotion to oppose a political figure was directed towards ending the killing of hundreds of thousands of babies per year. Imagine this much effort and the consolidation of a nation towards ending the horrible practice in the violation of the most basic civil rights bestowed unto mankind: The God given right of LIFE!

Psalms 106:37-38

They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to false gods. They shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan, and the land was desecrated by their blood.

Imagine this fact: With the exception of China with her immeasurable statistics on this evil practice, the United States has shed more blood of the most innocent than any other developed nation in the world.  We have aborted far more babies than any other country, far more than even those who have completely legalized the evil practice of abortion.  We are so good and efficient in the abortion business, that we have a government-sponsored industry that is dedicated to furthering this practice.  So good and efficient at aborting babies, that during the violent process of abortion, professionals boast about saving certain body part from destruction to meet market demands for various body parts, and making a profit from the sales.  So efficient is this industry, it succeeded in making the choice to abort an easy and available service for all who so desire.  So efficient, many of their executives and medical directors are making six figure salaries.  Yes, they do boast about their successes!

Just imagine the heart of Christ, and how He grieves as He looks over at His beloved children being sacrificed for no other reason than a “choice”.  Imagine our Lord’s heart as He looks and realizes that His church is silent and is just standing by and watching this happening  over and over.  But even more so, just imagine our Lord seeing that His Church is not just silent anymore, but that the Church is now in support of this practice and openly promotes  those who champion this evil ruling of Roe v. Wade. Just imagine!!

Just take a moment and imagine, why would our Lord remain unresponsive to such unchecked evil in the destruction of His most beloved creation?  Why would we imagine it’s all good with the Lord, to live a life so callously, that we view abortion as a safety valve, or just another choice?

How can I imagine otherwise, when these same people who are so willing to ignore or support the killing of hundreds of thousands try to convince me that they care about LIFE and Civil Rights. If we do care about LIFE, why do we support or ignore the greatest civil rights violation known to the modem world? The practice of #abortion.

Just take a moment and imagine, if you will, why would our Lord remain unresponsive to such unchecked evil in the  systematic destruction of His most beloved.  Why would we think that the Lord trumps our secular  circumstances over the LIFE of any of His beloved?

Stop and imagine the reality of these words written in the Scriptures:

Psalm 139:13-14

For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.  

Now imagine that the above passage of Scripture applies to every single person ever conceived, including the 50 million plus, who were aborted since Roe V. Wade.  Imagine the audacity of our thinking, that we have the right to destroy, by our choice, any of the ‘fearfully and wonderfully made’ people, who God created to praise Him.

Imagine the true and genuine love we would express as a nation, if we were to place all that effort in ending this tragedy, the same level of energy and passion we displayed in our passion to remove a statue we deem racist.  Our passion could move this country from ProChoice stance to one that chooses Life.

Some say that racism is an undeniable reality in the American cultural fabric, it’s a part of our DNA.  It makes me imagine and ask the question: is infanticide an undeniable reality in the American cultural fabric?  Is it now a part of our DNA?  The answer? I don’t know.  But this I do know: in this present day, I can only imagine, and dream of, and pray for a world without abortion.

New Person…Old World

2 Corinthians 5:16-17 NIV

So from now on, we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

The New Person in Christ in not just to accept Him as Lord and Savior with an attitude of ‘that’s all I need to do’.  Too often, Christians run around boasting: I know Jesus; He is my Lord and Savior.  Yet, there is an ever increasing blurred line differentiating Christians from a society that is operating far from the will of God.  As a people, we are born again and assured of sharing in His eternal kingdom, made possible by the Son’s obedience to the will of the Father. This Jesus, who subjected Himself to be crucified and suffered death on the Cross, this Jesus, who rose from the grave, ascended to Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father, is continually interceding for us so that our sins may be forgiven.  Because of this act of love by our Lord, we are now a New Person in the eyes of the Father.  So why would we live, behave and accept the things of the world, as if nothing happen, if we are now renewed in Him?

You see, we must stand on Jesus’ promise. We have to purposefully (and I stress purposefully, not just when trials and tribulations come our way) rely on His promise. The New Person must engage in dedicated and purposeful reliance on praying and fasting to take us through the challenging times that can derail us from our faith.  It is vital that we spend more time worshiping and praising our Lord.  This is our reassurance that when the wiles of the devil come our way, we will be able to stand against the evils of this world.

We have to be steadfast in our conviction, a conviction that is sealed by the Holy Spirit.  This is the only way that we can resist the pressure and temptation of the worldly views.  When we are out of synch with God, we often become willing to substitute His word and His ways for worldly opinions.  We simply lose the understanding of God’s purpose and His will for our lives.  Sadly, an increasing portion of the Body of Christ is marching onto this trap, accepting the rhetoric of the worldly plan to deceive.  A plan that is so successful that we are now seeing an ever developing scorn toward Christianity.  This scorn towards Christianity, believe it or not, is not just from non-believers, but from Christians themselves who also do these ungodly things.  This is the Apostle Paul warning us of this state of being: 2 Timothy 3:1-5,

But mark this:  There will be terrible times in the last days.  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God – having a form of godliness but denying its power.  Have nothing to do with such people.

This attack on the body of Christ is a spiritual battle that unfortunately, most of our brothers and sisters in Christ are not prepared or equipped to fight or endure. This is a continuous battle against Christianity, amid the sad fact that many of our churches are busy trying to build social clubs and comfort zones, instead of equipping the saints to face this challenge.

I wrote this article as more of a personal challenge for the saints of the kingdom, an article encouraging the New Person in Christ to equip ourselves to fight this persistent degrading of the faith.  I do believe that the stronger the individual is, the stronger the community of saints will be.   I have often times quoted the saying; “You are only as strong as the weakest link.” This also applies to the Body of Christ; the weakest link can cause the whole to stray.

Personally, how do we protect ourselves from this incursion of worldly way into our lives?  Well, I am glad you asked! It begins with our time spent in prayer and devotion.

Devotion time matters: For most of us, the time spent engaged in secular activities is much, and I stress much more that the time we spend in commune with God.  This modern society that we live in is a busy one, and the distraction and activities we engage in are stealing our commune time with God.  This subtle erosion of our time that is spent in undisturbed prayer and devotion is keeping Christians chained to the darkness of the world. Let me make this clear, Satan is not necessarily trying to get us to renounce our Christianity. One of his schemes is to distract the people of God, throw them into confusion that usually leads to division and compromise of God’s standard.  Satan’s goal is to throw the church into confusion and turmoil with a slow methodical progression onto spiritual death.   Let me give you a present time example of real confusion and compromise within the Body of Christ; how many of us know Christians, who know God, yet accept abortion as simply a personal, individual choice, and not the morally unacceptable act that it is?  Wouldn’t you say this very issue has caused a great deal of confusion and division within the Church community?  Pro-Choice believers are in the church also, and they are trying hard to convince the New Man, the Body of Christ that abortion is a personal choice.  This line of division should not be a struggle for the church because God’s Holy Word is crystal clear on life and the taking of life.  This line of division should be a dividing line between the people of God and the world, certainly not among the people of God.  How about Christians, who accept homosexuality and the marrying of the same, as simply an ‘alternative’ life style, a disobedience, so blatantly oppositional to the Word of God?  Why are these things happening within the midst of God’s people?  These things are happening with the Body because too many of us are not grounded in the Wword of God.  We are easily fooled and led astray by the smooth talking instigators with their clever rhetoric.

Do you think as a New Person in Christ, we glorify or demonstrate thankfulness to God with these thoughts or opinions or as in so many of these cases, even our engaging actions?  The New Person cannot accept some part of God’s word and reject or alter others.  This type of being is call sinful; you are now worshiping in the form of depraved understanding.  Paul warned us over and over about this spiritual ill:  look at Romans 1:21

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to Him, (Paul was writing about people who knew God.  Note that he did not say they know of God or know a god.  These are people who knew God more than just in a casual way; they are familiar and well-versed on the nature of God.  The Amplified Bible this as, “They knew and recognized Him as God.”) But their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Let me make this clear: glorifying God and being thankful to Him are not things we only do within the confinement of the opening and the closing benediction of a church service.  In Christ, we are New People, and our entire lives should demonstrate who we are.  We cannot be one way in our church environment and be another way in the world.  I will assure you, with this kind of behavior within Christendom, the chances of the world’s view creeping into the fabric of the church are more likely than the Church influencing society for the Kingdom.  We cannot be of two nature; either we are fully committed to Christ or fully committed to the world.  We should glorify God with all our being and show gratitude in every manner to which we conduct ourselves for the very moment we wake up in the morning to when we go to bed at night.  This can only be accomplished through daily devotions to God our Father in heaven.

This brings us to the second cause that will drive one to develop a futile mind, a state of darkened understanding.

Separation from God: “They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God.”  The King James translation:  Being alienated from the life of God.

Let me make something very clear.  Alienation from God is not God alienating Himself from us.  The alienation that Paul is referring to is self-inflicted…it is self-banishment.  As we begin to reject parts of Scripture, we remove ourselves further and further away for the safety of God’s covering, we become self-estranged.  Maybe it was this kind of spiritual dilution that Jesus was talking about when he described the Church in Laodicea in Revelation 3:15-16

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot.  I wish you will either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of My mouth.”

I think the phase that we would use today to describe this Church is “wishy-washy.” The Bible didn’t tell us what the basis of this criticism by Jesus was, but it sounded like He was disgusted with their behavior.

The above passage came to mind as I was reminded of the history of the city of Laodicea.  This is a city that seemed to have embodied the same characteristic of the western world of today.  Laodicea was a city with a vibrant economic system; she was the center of the financial world, and her banking system and investment industry were the greatest in the world at that time.  This was a city that manufactured some of the most sought after goods, such as medicine and clothing. Being that the city was part of the Roman Empire, with the main religion being paganism, Laodicea was well-known for its ritualistic and immoral festivals and celebrations.  Now, as we see in Revelation 3:14-17, Jesus did not say that the church of Laodicea was in a state of apostasy, as He did with others within the seven churches that He gave special instructions to.  Nevertheless, this was the only church that He did not have anything good to say about; He labeled them lukewarm and then spoke about their inclusion into the ins and outs within the city’s financial systems.  Here is a church right smack in the middle of an exciting, bustling financial district. I can only imagine just how tempting it was for the Christians to be a part of the financial opportunities. They were probably too busy to pray, too busy to worship on a regular basis. They were so captivated by the hoard of financial privileges that they forgot about the poor amongst them. Worst of all, their evangelism activity was probably non-existent. In other words, they weren’t necessary mingling with the pagan’s worship as some church were doing at the time; they were just not doing much for the kingdom.  The Church of Laodicea existed with the title of Christian in name only…in other words, they were civil Christians.

It’s obvious why our Lord used the term lukewarm to describe the Laodicea Church, as they would know exactly what He meant.  The phrase ‘lukewarm’ was a well-known term used to describe the Laodicean water supply at the time. This was one of the few drawbacks for this ancient city. Unlike the two other main cities around her, one known for its medicinal hot springs and minerals, and the other known for its refreshing cold water, Laodicea sat in the middle of the two and was known for its tepid, nauseating, lukewarm water: water that smelled funny and tasted gross and that you would want to spew right out of your mouth!

They were neither hot nor cold, a fitting description for the way Christians were in the city of Laodicea. But, wouldn’t you say that the New Person of today is beginning to look more like this church in Laodicea?  Look at the way we are today:  modern Christianity has woven itself into the fabric of society, a society with a very similar infrastructure as the city of Laodicea. Our financial system and economic infrastructure sure resembled that of the Laodicea.  We now live in a time when there are lots of exciting opportunities to distract us from true devotion. The same danger of ignoring our responsibility, our calling as the New Person in Christ, is in danger of waning because the forefront of our desires is to be a part of the opportunities in this great land.  This a danger that we all face. As a matter of fact, I will go as far as to say, most of us have fallen into this trap on various levels.  This warning is from our Lord, making it known that this lukewarm state of being is even worse than being cold and indifferent to the faith.  In other words, it is better to not call yourself a Christian, as that person will be more acceptable, than one who is lukewarm.

This is why I so appreciate the season of Lent.  It serves as a reminder for us to examine ourselves, to look back on the past months and ask ourselves; how have I been of service to our Lord? As we answer this question, we can use the forty pensive days of Lent to get our lives right with God.  You see, most neglected activities within the Body of Christ in today’s modern society are worship, praying and fasting.  The most grievous of our neglect is our duty to take the Word of God to a lost world. We have neglected to obey the last command that Jesus gave before He was ascended to heaven: Matthew 28:19: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

So, we see that first we start to align our understanding with worldly interpretation, and we fall into that state I refer to as ‘darkened understanding’.  This leads to a life that is indifferent to holy living, one that has us resembling the world and causing us to be ‘alienated from God’.  This kind of existence can lead to the most dangerous of state:  ‘The Hardening of Heart!’

So I tell you this, and insist on it in the Lord, that you must no longer live as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thinking.  They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Ephesians 4:17-18

This is that state when the heart loses it capacity to feel and become insensitive, indifferent, and unresponsive to the teachings of God, which is to live a life that is acceptable to Him.  When we are this far removed from holy living, it is as if our conscience stops functioning.  Spiritually, we are now in a state of death.  In the flesh, this could be equated with the inability to feel pain.  Without a nervous system to inform the brain of impending danger, we are at serious risk of fatal bodily harm.  Pain, like our conscience, is a good thing and serves a distinct purpose.  If you have an illness or a disease and you lose the ability to detect it through pain or discomfort, you stand a good chance of dying from it.  Can you imagine, you place your hand on a hot stove, but because you lost the ability to feel pain, you don’t instinctively pull away?  You will just leave your hand there burning, until it is consumed and kills you.  This is what the hardening of heart does to our spirit.  We are no longer able to feel the prick of conscience, that saving fire-pain of wrongdoing!  The pain of separation from God!

Because we no longer have hatred of sin, we will lose our desire to serve Christ.  We no long care about the thing that our Lord cares about and our hearts will not be broken, for the things that break His.  Even though we profess to be Christians, we are no longer operating under Christ protection and care.  There are many in the Body that have fallen victim to this heart condition, ‘hardening of heart’, usually after they succumb to the previous two conditions; ‘darkened understanding’ and ‘alienation from God’.

These three traps are not so foreign or far removed for God’s people today.  We live in a very exciting world!  This is world that is a constant distraction to all people, including the people of God.  However, to part take in this desired standard, there are demands upon the alteration of moral standards as put forth by God holy words.  Too often Christians willingly obliged to these demands to be acceptable in society and be a part of it all.

You see, we live in a world today that constantly feeds us with the notion that nothing is our fault or really wrong. If no-one gets hurt, and it feels good to you, then it is ok! This is a world that now says greed is not greed anymore; it is now placed under the heading of ambition! Sin is not sin anymore; we just make mistakes.  Just say, “I am sorry”, and move on, please. Lies are not lies any more.  It is now placed under the category of, “I mis-spoke.” We promote and push pornography and profanity.  We call it art and freedom of expression.

These are some of the many destructive ways and habits that Christians can fall into.  The result:  A subtle, but persistent numbness towards living a holy life, a life that results in our Lord spewing us out of His mouth. Because of this hardness of heart, we no longer see it necessary to repent to some of the most grievous sins that are committed. Why do we have to repent? We have already decided that it is not sin.

We now accept artist who produce some of the most noxious and reviled forms of entertainment; we call it art and the expression of self.  Churches are now accepting homosexuality as just an alternative lifestyle. Abortion is now promoted as healthcare, even in the Church.  We have tolerated language and speaking habits that are so profane, it can only be described as words coming from one with a rottenness of the conscience that is long dead and decayed.

However, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in Him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.  You were taught, with regard to your former way of live, to but off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be make new in the attitude of your mind; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.  Ephesians 4:20-24

My advice to all: guard you hearts against theses worldly way which will lead to a futile and derelict mind. We must constantly think about what we are doing, agreeing with and aligning to.  Is it in line with God’s Word, and most importantly, does it glorify God’s kingdom? Our persistence on regular worship, prayer and fasting will better equip us with the discernment to know and resist the temptation of this modern society in an Old World.  As we so equip ourselves, we will be emboldened to take this good news to the New Word that other may be saved also.

To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, He will give eternal life.  But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.  Roman 2:7-8

1 Peter 2:9 describes what it means to be a New Person in Christ.  Peter wrote: “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him Who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”

How wonderful a reality is this!  Why would we want to regress back into the darken world? The reality is this: the lore of the world is a great temptation that the strongest of Christians fall victim to its glittering luxury.  The question then is: how can the New Person avoid this “lukewarm” state of being as it is so abhorred by Christ?  Well, the answer can be found in the Gospel of Matthew chapter 5 – 7. This is the passage of Scripture that Christendom refers to as the “Sermon on the Mount”.  This was Jesus’ first public sermon in which He instructed the listeners on how to live a holy life.  Here we have the most complete sermon ever preached on how we worship, behave, and govern, along with many other social and communal issues.  In the content of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus made two import statements that we should pay special attention to in order for us to live the holy life as He so stressed in His sermon.  Jesus said: 1) When you pray: 2) When you fast.  Jesus did not speculate on whether we should pray or if we happen to pay, He expects us to pray.  As a matter of fact, Jesus’ statement came across as if He expected nothing less than a full prayer life or pray as an integral part of our being.  So as we continue to observe this season of Lent and beyond, let us remain in prayer so we do not fall into a broken and darkened world.  This is the only way, and I will stress, the only way to maintain a holy life that is pleasing to Christ.

God is Watching

The events of the last few days surrounding the death of George Floyd have brought so much pain and destruction, and once again, great divide. When one man’s heart is so calcified that his hand, or in this case knee, bring death to another man in such a brutal way, we all bleed. The murderer is white, the helpless victim, black. All evidence points to the darkness of racism. 18 other complaints were made against this very officer; I wait for those details to unfold to see where the source of his wickedness resides. At least he is detained and in jail where he should be, and I pray that justice will be swift and strong.

George Floyd’s death was egregious and calls attention to deep wounds of racism. We have seen other such incidences in the past. This one is different. There is no ambiguity, and folks are listening. We all now have this great opportunity to work through bigotry and help our white brothers and sisters to look through a different prism. The law already grants us equality, the challenge is the heart, which is what guides our actions.

Peaceful protests can be very effective but not in the clamor and noise of fiery riots and senseless looting. In the heat of passion and indignation, let us remain measured in our response so we do not fan the flames of discord and drown out our chance to meet at the table of reconciliation. As we stay true to our message of equality, let us refrain from lobbing disrespect and bullying on social media or otherwise. There are many opportunists out there preying on the confusion and fueling disharmony. I have heard of political groups mobilizing. These groups do not represent the desire for social justice. They have their own political agenda and should not be allowed to rain terror and eclipse this opportunity.

Our emotions were already raw from COVID19 anxiety and stress, and tensions were already high. I implore anyone reading this: stay calm. Pray. Debate peaceably. Don’t offend. Talk less. Listen more. Be patient. Love again and again. And again.

I invite you to close your eyes and breathe in these words. Then exhale slowly.
It may feel like no one is listening. Find your strength from above. God is watching.

I am Pro-facts

Fact: Human instinct is to be spiritually and naturally Pro-life.

Every human is a Pro-life being.  If you say you are Pro-choice, you are deceiving yourself, and worse yet, contributing to the deception that increases the fatality rate of unborn children. From the moment that every man or woman is conceived, the critically common thing between each person, is the struggle to stay alive.  Human reproductive cells, in the survival-of-the-fittest fight to live, become zygotes that continue fight to stay alive. This is an indisputable, natural, ingrained fact of the human DNA. So then I ask this question, if we struggle so much to say alive, from our very conception, and every moment thereafter, why would we purposefully yank that right and natural process from any other human, born or unborn?  The deliberate act of interrupting another person’s ability to follow this survival pathway is an egregious violation of that person’s natural right to stay alive and flies in the face of the Creator.

A Pro-choice stance actually defaults to mean that you are Pro-death. In embracing a Pro-choice position, you are actually trying to equate life and death with the same standard. This is not possible, as good and evil cannot be accepted within the same domain.  So it’s either you support life or you support death, but the two cannot be married.  In other words, the term Pro-choice is an oxymoron or even an antithesis. Which one of you are willing to rationally have your life aborted at any given moment as an option or a means to an end?  Whatever the social circumstances might be, if God chooses to create a life within, He is sovereign to do so. Rich or poor, within the confines of marriage or not, with the old or young, medically and mentally fit or not, timely or untimely, who are we to refute God’s sovereignty and condemn that person to death?  

If you consider yourself Pro-choice, Then I urge you to consider these two passages of Scripture:

‭Mark ‭12:26-27‬ ‭

“Now about the dead rising—have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!”

Fact:  All those innocent ones who were aborted have returned to the Lord, and are living souls in His presence.

You must keep this in mind as you take a stance to support abortion.  We must be mindful of this fact if you decide to support, ignore or even attempt to explain the killing of babies away as unfortunate, but necessary.  Consider that every one of those aborted children is now with the Lord.  They are all alive in The Lord! They are not dead in the presence of the Lord.  Abortion is not the end all; it is certainly not the end of the child.  In other words, we are not rid of the children we abort. If you thought otherwise, you are badly mistaken!  This fact should make us shiver. Anyone who is an unrepentant participant, supporter, or has an indifferent approach to the act of abortion, please understand that these children are witnesses against such people in the presence of their Maker.

Revelation 6:9-11

“When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained. They called out in a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters, were killed just as they had been.”

Every moment of your lives is spent struggling to survive. Therefore, you are Pro-life! None of us struggles to die, which confirm that none of us wants anything to do with death.  Yet we find it prudent to support a practice that purposefully brings death into the most defenseless and innocent among us.  Because of this bipolar approach to these little ones in the womb, we are condemning ourselves, as our very existence is a testimony of our knowledge that life is precious as we fervently struggle to maintain it. Each one of those aborted babies is a holy witness against the unrepentant inhabitants of the earth, where their blood were spilled amid their struggle to live.  In other words, they were struggling to live just as we are, even in the womb.

In the presence of the sovereign Lord, this act may be no different from the murder of Abel, when the Lord said to Cain, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground.” (‭Genesis ‭4:10‬) So will the blood of the aborted, along with the blood of martyrs, and those who were unjustly killed, cry out to the Lord against us.

What have we done, aborting our babies under the banners of Pro-choice? A “laundered” title to whitewash what it real is; Pro-death!  Are there really any life situations that would justify the deliberate and wanton death of a child?

Fact:  Abortion is the taking the life of a Child!

Love of the Songs

During one my meditations, I experienced a rush of thoughts coming to mind regarding the condition of the Church today.  My mind centered on Christian music in today’s world of technology, mainly in part due to the easy access through modern media. You know, the world of, “there is an app for that!”.  I started replaying many of the popular songs over and over in my head, paying keener attention to the lyrics and meaning of each line. One thing for sure, all of the songs were inspirational. And all of the words made me feel good. These are songs that I had been singing to for a while and felt quite connected to. But maybe that in itself is an underlying issue. They make me feel good!

Is today’s Contemporary Christian music robbing us of quality time with the Lord? Has our love for this modern contemporary Christian music caused us to reduce or replace our devotional time with God?  My concern is that too many of us are so drunk on this type of music, that we don’t realize how much our fellowship with God has changed course. It worries me that for many believers, contemporary Christian music has become the sum total of our worship and devotional time with the Lord. In other words, it has replaced the heartfelt sacrifice of praise and worship with a self-induced gratification of our love for these specific genre of music.  In other words, we have more passion for the style or type of music more than our passion for God and His decrees. 

There are clear indications that we are hooked on these songs in such a way that is only quenching our thirst for soft rock, easy rock, hip-hop, pop, and other categories of music associated with the mainstream secular society.  Let me make this clear, I am personally captivated with these genres of music, and I am not attacking the use of these songs as a means of worshipping of our Lord. The ability to make good music and write inspirational lyrics are certainly a gift from God, and we ought to use them to exalt Him.  My concern is not stemming from a place of attack on this genre of music, for truth be told, I am actually in love with them.  My preference of fellowship with God through music is not limited to the hymns-only, heavy-organ, light-piano, frozen-chosen style of worship. However, like so many other areas of life, misuse and overindulgence of the things we love can become idolatrous.  I hope to make myself clear on that. Here are some of my observations and my concerns.

1) We listen to the music more that we fellowship with God.

I am afraid these worship songs are turning us into junkies.  Junkies for these type songs, junkies for the artists with their cool public personas, and junkies hanging with the cool Christian fan base,  in place of building in us a zeal for the substance of the Lord. In other words, we gravitate to become worshipers of the worship songs and worshipers of worship leaders, so much so, that churches will seek out worship leaders who fit into a particular persona that gives this aura. I have seen Christian concert with fans (not worshipers) in such a frenzy, you could not differentiate their antics from that of a secular concert. Just think of the Grammys and how some of the artists electrify the crowds by infusing a worship song into their otherwise secular performances. Christians become so tickled silly by it, one would think they’re watching a bunch of toddlers in their first school performance.  It would seem like those caught up in the moment depend on the experience to settle their souls and assuage the guilt of watching the rest of the other stuff!

2) Many Christians rely on this music as a complete devotional tool to the Lord.

The music appears to have replaces our prayer life and replaces the time used to study the Scriptures.  This is one of the easier of the traps to fall into.  We live very busy, fast-paced lives and juggle a multiplicity of responsibilities. Oftentimes, we seek out ways to satisfy an obligation without having to put in the time and energy. As a result, many people find it more expedient to build their faith on these songs alone.  Additionally, for many of our younger generations of believers, the experience that the songs bring is a good, clean, fun way of being a Christian without  much of the other boring, monotonous type of services that their parents forced them to be a part of in their earlier years.  This shifting of our standards of worship reminds me of happened to a generation of us during the heydays of the televangelists rise to prominence.  Many Christians of our parents’ generation experienced this kind  phenomenon, but it was with another medium, not music. The televangelist era saw many substituting the king-size bed and the living room sofa for the church pews.  We are witnesses of how God exposed the flaws of televangelism in a very painful and public way.

3) The ease of access of the music draws us in and captivates us.

The fact is that this wonderful technological world we now live in has enabled us to garner very easy access to these music offerings anytime and anywhere, which has caused great increase in the amount of time, place, and space that we can listen and enjoy…well…worship.  This, I am afraid, may be causing Christians to fall into a false sense of security, thinking that they are living a life of holiness and fellowship with God through the music.  After all, we are listening to praise songs when we wake up in the mornings, while we are getting ready for the day, and when we are driving to work. Some of us can even listen when we are working and listen again when heading home.  I mean, we can’t get any holier living than that…can we! Yet many are lacking in knowledge and substance of God’s Holy Word due to the lack of actual time spent reading, studying, or even listening to the Bible (notice listen…yes, it now easy to listen to the Bible; there is an app for that also).  These songs have permeated our hearts and saturated our minds in powerful ways. They have replaced what really belongs there, the infallible Word and decrees of God. Music has shifted from being the conduit to being the substance. The Holy Spirit actually speaks to us about the importance of knowing the Scriptures. First He says:

“This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.” Hebrews 10:15‭-‬16.

Could this type of cultural shift, the marrying of the Christian life with pop culture, be a contributor of why so many Christians accept and even openly lead sinful lifestyles? Add this to the fact that many of our Churches aren’t preaching much from the Bible anymore.  Much of what churches are doing now are motivational sermons and seminars, right after they finished serenading us with these same songs.  I once read an article that compared our approach to these songs to King Saul’s reliance on David playing his Harp to soothe his troubled soul after God removed His anointing and gave it to David. This really opened my eyes…and ears!

The question then is: are we relying on these types of music as a replacement to true worship?  To honestly answer this question, we would have to ask ourselves these questions:  

  • Does listening to this genre of music serve as our devotion to God the majority of the times?
  • Are we more die-hard fanatics of the singers and writers of the songs than the content of the message?
  • Do we truly participate in praise and worship during church services, or are we spectators being soothed by our love for this genre of music?
  • When we go searching for a church home, do we make our choices base on the church’s choice of music?

While there is nothing sinful with any of the above, we must remain diligent and mindful of our attitude towards such things as they can lead to other more dangerous tangents such as idolatry, which can render our worship useless in the presence of our Lord. The Scriptures are clear:

“Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”  John 4:23-24

We need to make every effort to not become so complacent in our love for music that we lose the purpose of the song.  We cannot allow ourselves to become satisfied with just the continuous repetition of hearing these as a replacement of our devotion to our Lord.  A song cannot replace coming before God in repentance, praise and worship, and the studying of His word and decrees.  Taking the easy way out is a heart issues, the issue of priority when it comes to our relationship with our Lord.  Very importantly, don’t be discouraged in your desire to use music as a form of worship, adoration, and glory to God. He is worthy and deserving of our praise in all forms! Continue to play and listen to these praise and worship songs that we are blessed with through a mere touch and swipe of our fingers or voice command. And let’s use the opportunity of social media and other technological venues to choose contemporary Christian music to spread the good news of the Gospel and the saving grace of Jesus Christ when they come to the foot of the cross. Just remember, while they are an aid and guide for worship, they are no substitute for a penitent heart in true worship, dedicated to the studying of the Word, surrendering to the sacraments, along with undefiled devotion to the Lord.

The Amazing Power of Choice

How many of you are dog lovers? I have a dog. Milo, an Egyptian Pharaoh mix, who thinks she’s part human. Milo tries to do everything we do…sometimes, she even tries to talk. I’ve heard that if you live long enough with your pooch, you begin to look like it, or it begins to look like you. I did some research, and it appears to be true1

So I took a selfie of my doggie and me2 .…very little resemblance, thank the Lord!

I am people and Milo is dog, and that’s that way I like it! But life is something else, isn’t it?

Today is an important day in the life of our Cathedral and indeed the wider CEC communion. On the 3rd Sunday of each year, we pause and take some time to call attention to, and commemorate the sanctity of human life and all the wonderful elements associated with being alive. And we have much to celebrate today: so many of our family and friends did not live to see 2017, but we made it, praise the Lord!

I am grateful for this opportunity to spend some time with you exploring this life-business, as we try to better understand where and how we fit in with our own little orbit, and how we cross-section with everyone else on this journey. At a fundamental level, it is important that we fully understand this principle: ALL life, and all LIFEFORMS, come from one source, and that is God. God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit: – Three in One3, triune yet separate.

It is also very important that we fully understand that each one of us: you, me, all the wonderful people that we know, and even the…not-so-nice ones, every single person, was created in the image of God. We bear His image4 -three parts: physical, psychological, spiritual, making one complex being.

Our body is not our mind, and our mind is not our spirit. They are all separate, but they are still united, and we, of our own strength, cannot separate them. This is one of the mysteries of life. God designed it that way, and because He is the great I Am…no questions asked! God is a master craftsman, and His masterpiece is: man: you, me, and everyone around you.

Now, we know that ALL life forms come from the same Creator and are created each with its own unique intention and purpose. If you take a closer look at the very early stages of development in living organisms5, you will see with amazement that they are very similar in appearance and characteristics.

There is a strong similarity is the design of lifeforms. The REZ youths and I did a little study session on this a few months ago. Fascinating stuff! Last month, the entire nation was mesmerized watching the birth of two bald eagles babies6, in the wild, with a high-level zoom camera watching every twitch.

I admit…I was one of the gawkers…24 hour vigil…so amazing. Like so many other forms of living organisms, these bald eagles were not made in the image of God, but we cheered them on nonetheless, because they represented life, and the beauty of being alive. We weren’t waiting for the birds to get life…they already had it! We were celebrating their birth…a big difference! See, life begins at conception, not at birth. If we are willing to celebrate the lives of birds, and cats, and puppies, and even nasty lizards, how much more should we be celebrating the life of a child!  Irrespective of what society would have us believe, God’s creatures really don’t wait around until they are born to be alive. Let me say that again: God’s creatures don’t really wait around until they are born…to be alive. That is undisputable truth. Consider the way a baby moves in his mother’s womb7

…how he rolls around, kicks his legs, often times violently, right Mom? Sometimes, it hurt! …how he hiccups, and pees, and poops.These are not functions of something UN-ALIVE! Consider for a moment, how a little baby girl snuggles up under her mother’s ribs, inside the womb… responds to her mother’s voice, and yawns when she is tired. A clump of lifeless cells CANNOT imitate life in this manner. The fact that an unborn baby is still a baby is simply indisputable.

We can agree on this basic fact, so why then, do we get so uncomfortable and squirm when we talk about the unborn? Why is the subject of abortion so acrimonious, divisive and disagreeable? The answer is clear, but it is complex. So before we continue, let us agree to open our hearts and our wills to the bidding of the Holy Spirit, that He would guard us from any misunderstanding or disrespect. And that He would allow us to find His truth, because that is what we desire.

So, the uncomfortable feeling we get when we try to discuss the issues of abortion lies deep in our psyche. Literally! There is a fancy academic term for it: it is called COGNITIVE DISSONANCE, which is fairly modern in definition, but not in substance, it is a phenomenon that is as old as Adam and Eve. Cognitive dissonance8 is defined as the state of having inconsistent thoughts, beliefs, or attitudes, especially as relating to behavioral decisions and attitude change…it is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas or values at the same time, performs an action that is contradictory to their beliefs, or is confronted by new information that conflicts with these values. Simply put, cognitive dissonance is when we have one set of beliefs but our attitudes and actions say something different. This is what Adam faced in the Garden of Eden, and it led him to disobedience and sin!

Let’s look at a more modern example: you’re invited over for dinner by some good friends. Now, you love meat…all kinds of meat. In fact, when you’re home, and no one’s looking, you love meat so much that you actually set aside all your utensils. You use your fingers and dig in with everything you’ve got: pork, steak, barbeque chicken, curry goat, oxtail…no discrimination here! Safe to say, you’re NOT a vegetarian. So your good, good friend invites you over for a fun evening, and you are excited to spend some time hanging out…well…and eating meat, of course. You get there, and the table is beautifully decorated with all kinds of goodies…you’re hungry. You look over at the platters: vegetable salad, re-fried beans, pasta…you look again…you see broccoli, and carrots! You begin to feel faint…right…nauseated even. Cognitive dissonance IMMEDIATELY kicks in! It is the only thing that can save you! Your thoughts and beliefs are screaming one thing: leave! Say you have a contagious illness and leave this house immediately…this is a trap! This is what your mind is telling you. However, your actions say something completely different. You quickly do some mental push-ups, you sit down politely, you fluff your napkin in your lap, and you eat your greens energetically. Even thank your host for her kind hospitality. Right? Cognitive dissonance is a powerful force…it a state of mental stress that propels us to act in ways that are totally opposite to what we really want to do. In many ways, it helps us survive a crisis.

Folks, cognition dissonance is what lies at the center of the abortion controversy for believers. I don’t, for even one moment, believe that we stand in opposition to the fact that life begins at conception, rather than at birth. As Christians, we don’t dispute the fact that God fashions life purposefully out of NOTHING…out of dirt…black dirt, and white dirt, and red dirt, even yellow dirt…whatever color muddy clay He chooses, and He uniquely and wonderfully creates each one of us…in HIS own image…filling us with potential and purpose for HIS divine will at OUR conception. No, we don’t dispute that at all. We are not held in some kind of wait-and-see-what-the-image-will-be pattern for nine months until we emerge from our mother’s womb. Not even cockroaches and caterpillars follow that pattern…much less us! No! At the point of creation, when that sperm meets that egg, and the 46 chromosomes begin their life dance together, we take on the very image of God, right there, right then. This plan is beautifully written in Psalm 139:13-16. ”For You formed my inwards parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them , the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” This passage is very clear and leaves nothing out.  Imagine, for a moment, take a moment and picture in your mind, how tenderly God molded each one of us in our mother’s womb and laid out the individual plans for each of our lives.

How many of you have ever seen an ultrasound? Don’t you just love them? Fascinating technology! I introduce you to baby Leo…he lives in England. This precious baby started his smile from in the womb at 31 weeks10…4-D imaging; here, he is 5 months old…same enchanting smile.

Sovereign God, how awesome you are! My brother is having a baby, due this July, and I have seen his sonograms. Even at 24 weeks, I know without a doubt in my mind that this baby has my brother’s 23 beautiful chromosomes…same peanut head, chiseled jaw-line, and long, scrawny fingers!  The image of life mimicking life is amazing! This baby is not waiting until July to see if he will be alive and counted as a human. He’s alive right now, and is living it up in his mommy’s tummy! We’ve seen it on the 3-D sonogram!

So, if we know with our heads, and we believe with our hearts, that we are hand-crafted by God, and made directly in His image, long before even our mothers even knew us, why then, do we find it ok to allow ourselves to sin against God by taking the life of the unborn child that He so purposefully made? This is the great conflict for all of us. It is the tricky part of this entire abortion debate. Friends, this is cognitive dissonance in its ugliest form. It is called free will. It is also called choice. This is the summation of a woman’s right to choose: my life, my body, my choice…my right to choose my attitude, my prerogative to select my perspective, and my decision to orchestrate my course of action, even if it runs counter to what I believe. Now that’s my head talking. But there are two other parts to this wonderful creature called me. Because I was made in the image of God, I am more than just physical…I also have a mind (soul), and I also have a spirit. This is what causes the abortion debate to SEEM so complicated. The truth is, cognitive dissonance is not always a bad thing…because it helps to sound the alarm bells of our conscience. The entire abortion debate becomes really simply when we fully understand the power of choice and how it connects, reconciles, and, restores us to our image-bearer: God.

So let’s take a deeper look at the AMAZING POWER OF CHOICE. The current laws in the United States, Roe vs Wade, to be precise, protect the rights of women… and men, because 50% of every baby belongs to the dad… to terminate a pregnancy if they do not want their conceived child. It does not give credence to the reason for the abortion, and there are many, many reasons given for why women reject their babies. Much research and data have been compiled to capture these statistics. Some of the reasons women cite are deeply emotional and painful; these are called “hard cases”, as opposed to relative cases which are less complex. Let’s take a look at the data11:

We see here, that the overwhelming majority of babies are aborted not because of hard cases, where the women have been the victims of rape, incest, and other violent crimes, or where the health and welfare of the mother or babies were in jeopardy. Statistics show that most women reject their babies because of timing or inconvenience:

  • I already have children and do not want any more. (30.9%)
  • I want to delay having a child until later. (21.1%)
  • Having a child at this time will disrupt my education or career. (19.9%)
  • I am not emotionally ready or stable. (9.8%)
  • I can’t financially afford a baby at this time in my life. (6.6%)
  • I don’t know or have issues with the father of the child and don’t want to be a single parent. (4.4%)
  • The baby is at risk. (3.1%)
  • I am too young, and my parents are going to be very upset. (…I am Christian, and I feel ashamed. I will disappoint too many people…and so on… (1.5%)
  • Other reasons (1.6%)
  • My physical health is at risk. (1.1%)

These figures show that the numbers of women who choose abortion due to violence against them are actually very low…less than 4.2%. Another very interesting point, surprisingly, is that of the number of women choosing abortion, 70% said they were Christians.

Since 1973, when Roe vs. Wade was passed, almost 59 million babies have been aborted in America. These numbers are hard to wrap our heads around. Let’s think about them for a little. Here in South Florida, we have approximately 6 million people. The amount of babies aborted here in America could fill Miami and her suburbs almost 10 times! Let’s look at it another way. The island of Jamaica has 2.6 million people. Let’s say we remove every single Jamaican from the island and replace them with babies who have been aborted. We could refill the entire population of the island. Let’s do that another time, a 3rd time, a 15th time, 20 times…we could still replace the population. In fact, we could replace the entire population of Jamaica 22 times, before we even get close to the number of children who were aborted in America alone. If we use the figures from China, our minds get fuzzy…we could refill Jamaica over 900 times, with millions of babies left over! The data is sobering.

Let’s take an objective look at the legal side of the matter. Laws are very important in helping us keep the peace and protecting our persons and property. Without laws, we would have nothing but anarchy. How many of you know the movie, “The Purge”? In this box office film, the government decided to appease the people’s desire for freedom of expression and abandonment, so on one week-end each year, for 24 hours, in total dystopia, the laws are abated, and people are free to do whatever they want: run around in the buff, terrorize, steal, vandalize, even murder. The dastardly acts must be done in the specific time-frame allowed by the law to be discounted. Seriously? In the movie, people had to create some inventive ways to protect themselves during these black-out periods! Just imagine! Now, truth be told, when I saw this movie, I personally began to fantasize. There were at least 2 people that I could think of who would make this purge-thing worthwhile, right? For a second, I got caught up in fantasy of The Purge and the thrill of lawlessness. Can you imagine that? In reality, thank the good Lord, we have very stringent laws in place to protect us, and we don’t have a purge…no we don’t. Yet, people still choose to terrorize, steal, vandalize, rape, even murder. Why? Because moral values are not hinged on the law. It’s a heart issue!

The American judicial system permits women to abort their babies. This is also the law. It is a fairly one-sided law when you compare it to other legislature that protects parties on all sides, even in conflicts. For example, our basic laws restrict us from harming other people: assault, battery, murder, and so on. Everyone in America has equal rights of protection under these laws. The laws designed to protect unborn children are different: they are contradictory and flawed. For instance, the mother of the unborn baby can terminate its life at any time…without repercussions. In this case, the baby is called a fetus. However, if anyone else causes the death of the baby, such as in the case of a car accident, violence, murder, etc., magically, the fetus becomes a child, and the perpetrator is criminally charged and prosecuted. Did you know that this particular law is not new or unique to the United States? Take a look at Exodus 21:22-2312: “If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, and no lasting harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any lasting harm follows, then you shall give life for life…” Whaaat????? Did you know that was there in the Bible? I didn’t! This is good stuff! In this passage, the Bible does not specifically address what would happen if the woman took it upon herself to harm her child, but it clearly shows God’s position regarding the unborn child. I had ascribed the genius of this law to legislatures on the Hill. The Bible, wow! Roe vs. Wade completely flies in the face of this mandate. This law has also taken the rights of parents over their children and turned them over to the state: schools, courts, etc. so that minors who become pregnant can make life-altering decisions outside of the protective shield and love of their parents. 40% of minors who have had abortions report that their parents had not been informed. That’s 1 out of every 2 children. This has led to immeasurable brokenness and pain for many families. So the earthly laws say it’s ok to terminate a pregnancy…but the Judeo-Christian moral laws forbid it. Morality simply cannot be legislated. What a dilemma, right! And every day, we have young girls, as well as adult ladies, single and married women who find themselves in the emotionally charged and difficult circumstance of dealing with an unplanned and unwanted pregnancy. How do we reconcile this dissonance? We cannot pretend that this is not a tough, tough situation. We, simply can’t. But, we do have a soft landing…as in every other difficult point in our lives, we go to the Word, and we ask God for guidance.

Turn in your Bibles to Genesis 2:1513,“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ‘You may eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it, you shall surely die.” God created man and made a covenant with him. He gave him free will. Adam knew what God wanted him to do, and he knew what his choices were. Adam and Eve experience cognitive dissonance and used their freedom of choice to disobey and grieve God. There were grave consequences. Later, God met Moses on Mount Sinai and gave Him 10 Commandments for the Jews to follow. There were many other laws that would set His chosen people apart from the rest. This Covenant was law; they were mandates that had to be obeyed. “I am your God…thou shall have no other God but Me.” Honor thy father and thy mother…” “Thou shall not kill…” But the Israelites still had free will. They still had choice. Overwhelmingly, they chose to abandon the law and sin anyway. See, the presence of the law did not guarantee compliance. Sometimes laws are like yokes around our necks! God understood the plight of His people. He entered into a New Covenant that would supersede the Law. He asked His only Son, Jesus, to enter the fallen world as a man Himself and offer another way for us to reconcile with the Father. Jesus would come to earth and offer grace and salvation. It seems like a simple enough solution, and its simplicity is the essence and beauty of the Gospel. Well, it is really not that simply. Because we are created in the image of God, 3 parts in 1 person, when Jesus took on human form, He subjected himself to these mortal facets as well. All throughout the New Testament, we see instances where Jesus felt the hardships of the physical elements and times when He struggled and agonized in His spirit over the burdens He knew He had to bear. And He had choice. Like us, Jesus, the man, also had free will.

So how does this apply to the subject of abortion and the rights of a woman to choose? It boils down to love. When we love with our spirits, that is, our heart and soul, law takes a back seat. We know, very well, the eloquent passage captured in 1Corithians, Chapter 1314, 4Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; 5it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things…8Love never ends…13…so now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” This passage underscores the importance of real love. We are also very familiar with the teachings of Jesus explaining how love is the greatest commandment of all. Don’t get me wrong; our beliefs and our values are still embedded in the laws of God; this has not changed. The 10 Commandments do not disappear because we have a New Covenant with God. The difference now is that our actions and our behaviors are no longer motivated by these laws, and the fear that when we disobey, the punishment is swift and sure. Our attitudes and actions are now motivated by the love we have for a God that is holy, and loving, and merciful, and full of grace. When we love God, we fear Him. We are anxious to please Him. The temptation to sin is still ever present, but we fight our fleshly pull to follow our emotion and feelings, and instead, we make conscious decisions that will always honor Him. This love supersedes everything else and acts as a catalyst to help us find harmony and not dissonance in our soul.

Please allow me to share a personal story. In 1997, I was pregnant with my 3rd child. Cellphones weren’t very common those days, and although I owned one, they were like bricks, so I kept mine in my handbag. I also didn’t have caller id, texting, messaging, etc., on the phone. I had gone to my Ob/Gyn the previous week, and they had been frantically trying to reach me without success. Apparently, my protein levels were reportedly hovering in dangerously high levels, and my care team was very concerned about the health of my baby. After submitting myself to a number of preliminary tests, I was advised that there was a very high possibility that my child would be diagnosed with Down’s Syndrome. I felt faint. Confused. Broken-hearted. Angry. Yes, angry. I was happily married, had 2 beautiful children, and was one month away from my lifelong dream of going to medical school. I was a good Christian, obedient and giving. Why me? Why now? My husband and I were referred to a specialist for additional tests. We spent many hours in prayer, pleading to God for answers, and for peace. In our very first meeting with the geneticist, he flipped through his calendar and asked us to set a date for a possible termination of the pregnancy…citing health concerns, of course. My husband and I felt a heavy sense of violation and ended the consultation immediately. Although broken-hearted and afraid, abortion was not one of our options. Now, I want to be very clear: it was life that chose US…WE didn’t chose life! My husband and I didn’t reject the option of abortion because we are good people, nor because we are religious. Our reality was frightening. The thought of raising a special needs child was very intimidating, particularly because of timing and of overwhelming financial constraints. Abortion was an easier alternative…after all, we would be sparing the poor child a tough life. No one would know, and God would be merciful and forgive us. Right? Even the medical professionals said so. BUT my husband and I were not alone in our choice, and it made all the difference. We knew God. See, it was not our rational minds that made the decision to give our baby a chance to live; it was our spirits! Our rational mind could deal with the sin issue, the law issue, but it was our spirits that took the higher ground. Because we knew God, and because we feared God, and because we loved God, we were able to love our unborn baby unconditionally. This is what made the decision for us. When you know better, you do better, and we knew better. That is the amazing power of choice! My beautiful daughter is 19 years old this year. She is learning to spread her wings in adventure as she navigates her way through her first year of college. And her unbridled passion and love for life is contagious! We did go through with the gestational tests, amniocentesis, to be specific, primarily because we wanted to be fully prepared for the challenges of raising a child with Down’s Syndrome. The results were negative; my baby was normal. Imagine that! Why did God take my husband and me through this traumatizing journey? I don’t have the answer. But this, I know…my baby girl is not an accident, nor is she an afterthought! I bask in her beauty and her potential as she sets out to find her purpose in life. The same is true for my other children, and the same is true for yours.

The love of God is sure to help us find harmony and not discord in our spirit. But is takes courage. COURAGE. Love by itself falls short because it is mostly a FEELING. But when we have the courage and the boldness to ACT on this emotion, there is nothing we cannot accomplish…this is the embodiment of choice. Simple, right? NOT!…if it were, we would not have half the struggles that we do. How do we find this level of courage when we are faced with all kinds of doubt, insecurity, confusion, fear, worry, pain, grief, and even shame?

The truth is that we cannot on our own. But we can with God’s help.

Let’s take a look at how Jesus handled choice and what it means for us today.

  1. Jesus was asked to give up His life so that others may live. This was not an easy decision to make and follow through. We know He was heavily burdened with the knowledge and the reality of what he would face on the cross and was tempted to take the easier way out. We also know that Jesus experienced moments of physical weakness and emotional agony, knowing the crucifixion was drawing near. Let’s look at Matthew 26:36-3915,“Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and He said to His disciples, ‘Sit here, while I go over there and pray.’ And taking with him, Peter, and the two sons of Zebedee, He began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then He said to them, ‘My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me.’ And going a little farther, He fell on His face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” Jesus was asked to give up His life for the sake of another, and the weight of the responsibility caused Him great sorrow.

Mothers too, are asked to give up their life so that another may live. Unlike Jesus, this does not include the weight of sin or the physical death of the mother. But she, in many ways, is asked to give up her life as she knows it for her baby. In the case of an unwanted pregnancy (an undesired mission), the women often feel crippling fear and trepidation. They experience weakness and doubt, and are also tempted to take the easy road out. It was unconditional love that allowed Jesus to experience and encompass love for His creation. In the same way, this love gives the pregnant woman the strength to carry a baby that she really doesn’t want. She is able to sacrifice herself for others so that they, too, can have life. The passage in John 15:1316 puts it best, “Greater love has no man than this, that a man lays down his life for his friends.” Your life for a friend, imagine your own flesh and blood…your own image-bearer.

  1. Jesus suffered greatly through the ordeal of the crucifixion. He suffered physically, and He suffered emotionally. In every pregnancy, there is some degree of suffering, but in cases where the child is unplanned and unwanted, the suffering can be magnified greatly. Jesus drew strength from the unconditional love He had for the plight of man, who was vulnerable and fragile. The argument can be made here that man contributed to his own plight through his sinful nature. The love that Jesus had was greater than the sin that man had for himself. This led Jesus to look past His own suffering and endure His own pain for the sake of another. We know that God was not always happy with man. In fact, in Genesis 6:5-617, we see that God was sorry that He had made man. “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.” Although God regretted that He made man, still, His love was greater than His regret.

So too, it is for the woman facing the painful journey of an unwanted pregnancy. She finds herself sorry that she got pregnant and resents her baby, but her love through Christ is even greater than her regret, and it leads her to find grace and mercy for her unwanted child, who is quite blameless in the dilemma of his mother. There still will be suffering to some degree. There still will be hardships. There still will be burdens to bear. But the woman’s love for her child will ‘bear all things, endure all things, and sustain all things”. The unconditional love for the plight and frailty of the child gives that mother, and father, the strength and the courage to face their mountain and deal with it. This is real choice.

  1. Many people abandoned Jesus in his greatest time of need. Some were ashamed of him. Others were fearful that they would be judged if they associated with Him. Still others scattered because they were too confused to process what was happening.

Many women, who find themselves dealing with unwanted pregnancies, also experience abandonment and social rejection. Unfortunately, this is especially true in the church. Remember the statistics: 70% of women who have abortions consider themselves Christians. In the midst of their crisis, they often find themselves lonely and disparaged. Without love and courage, it is easy to run and hide. Abortion becomes attractive because it can be done before the shame becomes public. It is only the love of God, passed down to the love of the innocent baby that can provide the kind of courage to overcome such depth of despair. Courage, spurred by love, is a mighty and powerful thing.

The events surrounding the birth of Jesus captures the crisis of the unwed mother best. Mary, the mother of Jesus, was betrothed to Joseph but not wedded to him. Pregnancy was not a part of this arrangement because the law stipulated that Joseph could not have carnal knowledge of Mary. After she conceived, the law says she should have been stoned. Joseph found himself in a grave and extremely embarrassing position. This couple was a man and a woman in crisis! The law could not help these 2 young people. I am reminded of the famous quote from the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr18:

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy.” Joseph was a man in the midst of challenge and controversy, and the law was not on his side! But Joseph and Mary had a greater arsenal of power. They both knew God, and they knew the power of His love. Through the love that Joseph had for God, the love that had grown in him for Mary, and the love that he knew he would have for her child, Joseph found the courage to choose life over death. Imagine the pressure from his family and friends. They may have called him a fool, coward, a wuss. But Joseph took on a pro-life stance and made the decision to embrace his betrothed rather than cast her aside. Such love! Such courage! Such grace! And look at the child that was spared. The Son of God. The Redeemer of Man. Every child was created for a unique purpose, and God will use each one for greatness, regardless of the circumstance of his conception and his birth. This was the case with Jesus, and this is the case with every other child.

So…we’ve talked a lot about the philosophy behind abortion, courage, and choice. But what do we do with this information? How do we put it into action? It is our responsibility, individually and collectively, to empower others to make choices that are godly and sound. It is up to us, the older ones, to set the example for the younger ones by showing love and compassion, particularly when they are at their weakest emotional state and facing tough decisions like abortion. It is up to us the older ones who have experience the full love of Jesus Christ to take this love and extend it to those who are in pain. Without judgment! Our responsibility, as Christians, is to love our brothers, all of them, from the womb, to the tomb, and everywhere in between. Let us not join others, who, in their self-righteousness and piety, stand on a soapbox, and meeting a certain woman…such as Jesus did during one of his teachings on the Mount of Olives, publicize her sin, and set out to stone her. “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone”. That certainly rules me out. I would imagine it rules you out too.  Jesus said to the woman, “Go, and sin no more.” Woman, you have already been forgiven for conceiving out of wedlock; go and sin no more. Don’t compound your sin by terminating the life of your unborn child. The woman in the middle of the crowd was pro-choice, just like we all are. But in the presence of God, cloaked in His abiding love, she was emboldened, and her powerful pro-choice stance became the mirror–image of her powerful pro-life stance! This young lady, once full of guilt and weighed down by shame, was now liberated to have life and have it abundantly. But she would still need to make a sacrifice. Perhaps to lose her source of income. Perhaps to lose her companionship. Perhaps to lose her home. Her freedom. Her independence. Her dreams. Who knows what else? So too must the unwed mother, who is staring down the barrel of condemnation and shame. She is empowered. The choice is hers to make. She is pro-choice. But she must also be pro-life. It was not the law that saved the prostitute from being stoned. It was love. And the law shouldn’t be the deciding force to save the life of the baby either. It has to be love and courage. Only then, will we see a shift in the hearts of men. The law will lose its grip over all of us.

So…for the woman facing an unwanted pregnancy, married or single, “old” or young, rich or poor, victim or no victim, the choice should be a simple one. What Would Jesus Do? He would do exactly what He did for the 3 years of His ministry while He was here on earth. He would do what He did with the prostitute. Jesus would choose life. We have the power to do the same.

Through courage, we can choose to carry that other child that we did not plan for, can’t afford, aren’t prepared to raise, are ashamed to bear, and yes…can’t stand to live with. Through courage, we can find the strength to say yes to choosing loving alternatives…like adoption, which do not cause harm to our babies and grievance to God who created that precious life. Through courage, we can find the strength to sacrifice our own life for the sake of another, and rely on God to provide the means, the way, and the people to lend assistance and build us up where we are weak. And that is the function of the church. As a congregation, it is not enough for us to know the truth and not act on it.

If we expect to reach people, we must be prepared to use our actions just as much, if not more than we use our words less. James 2:14-1719 reminds us of this: “14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. A hungry man will barely be able to listen to you when his belly is empty, and the pangs of starvation tunnel through his belly. How will he concentrate? And for women who are grappling with the decision to abort, particularly young girls: teenagers struggling with shame, fear, confusion, financial anxiety, and maybe dashed dreams because of an unwanted pregnancy, our prayers alone simply fall short. Words are just not enough. Like the mother-to-be, we are also called to make a sacrifice. We literally need the entire village. Let use our time, talent, and treasure to help these young ladies through their pregnancy and way beyond, where the real challenges lie. This is one of the criticisms of the pro-choice movement: that we are quick to convince women to keep their babies but slow to stay the course in helping for the long haul. I implore you to step away from the comfortable zone of detachment or condemnation and walk alongside that hurting woman who needs that water from the well, both for her dehydrated body and her thirsty soul. And if you meet her after the fact…after she has made the ill-fated choice to terminate her pregnancy…for God’s sake, and for love’s sake, don’t throw that stone. Invite her to come with you…to meet the One who is the fountain of life…the only One Who can restore her to her place of dignity and grace. This is the Jesus that we know.

With each new generation, the issue of abortion becomes more complex. Today, we face the millennial generation: our future leaders, doctors, nurses, teachers, judges, lawyers, politicians, and even pastors. Millennials are perceived as over-sensitive with a strong sense of entitlement. They can be very demanding and often times come across as bratty and spoiled. These millennials demand their “own space” and platforms to “express” themselves. This generation is very vocal, opinionated, and love to pick up causes. They are motivated by feelings and do not place as much emphasis on critical thinking and long term consequences the way their predecessors did. Millennials easily spiral into tantrums and become very defensive at even the slightest perception that someone is “telling” them what to do. Because of their sense of detachment and strong focus on independence, abortion is an easy choice for the millennial. Alternatives to abortion: such as adoption and even keeping a baby that they don’t want, are not easy options them. On the other hand, millennials are powerful. They are also very passionate and gregarious, big-hearted and ardent. When they pick up a cause, their loyalty is deep. When you look at the pro-life movement across America, it is teeming with millennials and youths. God has a purpose and a plan for this passionate generation…the next leg of runners in the relay race of life. To reach millennials, we must have a relationship to them. Our actions with this generation, is what will win them over, not our words. We are Christians, and we are the standard-bearers for the Word of God. We must stay the course and not waiver, judge, or condemn. Let us continue to share the love of Christ with more of our actions and less of our words.

Let us pray for God to give us the courage to make tough morally-sound choices, even when it is unpopular. Let us pray for strength to overcome fear, doubt, and anxiety. Let us pray for passion, power, and purpose. Let us accept forgiveness when we sin and allow God to make us new. Let us use our time, talent, and treasure to help the unwed mother during the difficult period of the pregnancy AND after the baby is born. Let us find a pregnancy center or other place of benevolence and help out, supporting those who are broken and full of despair. Let us refrain from judgment and fling our arms wide open to receive the broken, tired, weak, and despondent.

Psalm 82:3-420 puts it best: “Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the rights of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”

May we never lose our courage to choose, and in choosing, may we always choose life. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Resolution 2016

It’s a new year and many of you are anxious and excited about starting, and eventually, realizing your New Year’s resolution goals.  Well, as for me, I have already started my resolution for 2016, which is to lose the 30 pounds which I somehow gained last year.  Honestly, it wasn’t really my resolution; it’s a must, as I cannot fit in a lot of my clothes anymore, and my budget doesn’t include a new wardrobe.  Whatever New Year’s resolution challenge you choose to take on is fine, and I wish you much success.  However, I do want to encourage all my friends and colleagues to include one other resolution: to make a purposeful and consistent effort to attend and be a vibrant part of a church this year.  If you are already attending regularly, then my encouragement is for you to increase your participation in the ministries of your church. If you are already actively involved in your church home, I encourage you to mentor someone and be a blessing to them.

I am driven to make this suggestion as I do have concerns with our generation’s approach to Christians living.  Many Christians have stopped attending church on a regular basis for reasons that vary. This has resulted in a people who are ignorant to the Word and it.sound doctrine. The scariest thing is that a high percentage of Christians are getting their information on social media.  I have seen so many well-meaning people accepting watered-down religion and heresy on Facebook and other site.  I have noticed that more and more are being influenced by misinformation and misguided trends on these sites.  This has led to a slow abandonment, and in some cases even total recanting of their beliefs in the foundational truth of God’s Holy Word. Somehow,  many of the influencers are able to spout their opinions as gospel truth, and people just run with them as facts.  This includes miscommunication in areas such as history, politics, race, and even medical matters.  However,  the most grievous is the manipulation of biblical passages to further a cause.  Those who want to believe these causes, good or bad, accept the inaccuracies as truth to further their agenda.  Why would we do that? Why would we accept biblical information from any John Doe or Jane Doe from who knows where?  Most of us are not even willing to check for accuracy. If it fits our preferred narrative,  we will accept it as truth.

To quote a line from my Bishop’s sermon this past Sunday, “Would you go to a doctor for legal advice, and would you go to a lawyer for medical advice?” You would not seek professional advice from someone who is not qualified in his or her field, so why would you accept theological claims from a person who is not trained in biblical interpretation.  Where do you find true theologians?  They are in a bible-based church near you!

So, for the New Year, foster a relationship with your priest or pastor in a liturgical communion. Give these people who are dedicated to the Word a chance to impart the Gospel to you.  Be purposefully active in your participation within the communion of saints as you partake in the liturgical activities and ministries of your local church. I promise, you will be blessed. 

There is no better time to start this New Year’s resolutions than this week.  Wednesday the 6th of January is the start of the Epiphany on the liturgical calendar, which is the celebration of the manifestation of Christ. Just as the Magi journeyed to seek His manifest presence, I also encourage you to head out to your local church and gain a greater experience and understanding of Christ’s manifestation in each of us.

So whether your resolution is to lose weight or to gain riches and everything in between, all that is just vanity, and can be lost in the blink of an eye.  Be resolute in that which is eternal: the inerrant Word of God.

Pope’s Visit

So the Pope is visiting this side of the world.  The media is all giddy with reporters run back and forth trying to get a shot of what color shoes the Pope is wearing.  (I was told the tradition is red shoe…this Pope broke tradition and wore black. My shoes are always black, so I have no problem with his choice).  Politicians are fighting each over what he said and didn’t say. Democrats are on the left, Republicans are on the right (well…nothing new here, moving on). President invited gay, transgender and pro-choice leaders to greet the Pope, with a chorus singing the gospel song; Total Praise (The President always try to marry holiness with immorality….I believe the Pope fell a sleep during that rendition). The average citizens are complaining about the traffic nightmare (nothing new here either).  Fiat in America is like “Cha Ching” because the Pope rode in their 500L model (I believe the “L” standards for luxury).  My FB page is all lit up, with Protestants saying, he is merely a man and Catholic saying, he is the holy father. (What do you say?…We may need a third category)

My only question is this; why did channel 10 interrupted the Hurricanes, Cornhuskers game, to broadcast the Pope’s arrival in Cuba?

With all that said, notice all of the above, have nothing to do with JESUS.

Global Warming or Global Warnings

The term “Global Warming” is used to describe the phenomenon of the persistent rising of the earth’s temperatures which serve as a catalyst for disastrous weather conditions and ultimately the impending doom of mankind. I dare say, what we are facing today is not global warming, but rather ‘Global Warnings’!

For the past two decade or so, one of the most talked about topic amongst the political and intellectual elites, is the claim that the earth, or if you want to refer to it as the globe, is in a persistent warming trend.  A warming trend, purportedly caused by environmental pollution, that they claim will eventually threaten the very existence of all living creatures and life as we know it.

This claim, of Global Warming, even though there is no solid scientific proof or any consistent data to confirm that such danger is imminent, has been championed by many, and is taught in many learning institutions as facts.  Politicians have used this claim as a major talking point in their political debates.  So there is no doubt that many are captivated with the notion, that this Global Warming claim, is a clear and present danger to the earth as we know it. Environmental pollution is real and dangerous; global warming is another thing altogether.

To clarify things a bit, and to put this bandwagon movement into perspective, we turn to the Scriptures and frame our conclusion as we study facts and historical data. The temperatures of this same globe have gone through many fluctuations in the past. There are many evidences and data that support these temperature changes.  Nothing that is happening now is new. Disastrous and unpredictable weather conditions have plagued the earth since the Fall.  You see, all of God’s creation was affected because of the fall of Adam and Eve, it wasn’t just man who had to deal with the effects of sin.  The environment and the natural world also had to endure pain and hardship.

Genesis 3:17-18

“Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.   It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.”

Ever notice that when we are hit with a devastating weather event, the experts will always compare it with the past? The experts will research history, find a similar event and make comparisons, in many cases even to make predictions regarding future events. It is common to hear stories from patriarchs of villages as they tell tales of past disasters and how they overcame the effects; they do this to help prepare the following generations for these natural disasters. Think about it, when Hurricane Andrew hit Florida in the 1990s, they said it was the worst hurricane to hit us since the great hurricanes of the 1920s. No one claimed  global warming was a threat in the 1920s.  We know, as fact, that sea levels rise and fall over the centuries. There are claims that Florida was once under water. Whether the past rise and fall in sea levels was the result of warmer temperatures in the North or South, I don’t know. I doubt the experts have a sure answer themselves.  Here is my observation: if the government and the people want to build their houses on the sand for their pleasure, don’t blame Global Warming when the sea returns and reclaims what is rightfully hers.  If you believe that the sea was there before, maybe we should expect it to return some day.

Romans 8:22

“We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.”

I urge you to look into the history of weather phenomenon; you will see that from the beginning of time, there were great floods, devastating droughts, destructive hurricanes and tornadoes, volcano eruptions, earthquakes and tsunami that made the ones of Japan and Indonesia seem like a wading pool. The story of Joseph tells about a drought that lasted seven years. How about the times of the great depression? Remember the dust bowl that severely affected the breadbasket of the U.S.? That was In the 1930s. With all these historical evidences, I would draw the conclusion that great weather disasters are nothing new for this Old World. Man has always lived with the fear of weather catastrophes to come threatening lives and livelihoods.

Well, guess what? The Global Warming alarm- sounding folks may have a point after all. They may be right in some ways. The globe WILL see more frequent and devastating weather phenomena.  But the true cause will not necessarily be because of man’s pollution of the earth.  The disasters will come upon us because of another age old issue: man’s sinful nature. Just like the days of Sodom and Gomorrah and the day of Noah, God will bring great destruction upon the earth through breathtaking weather phenomenon. In the time of Noah, the entire world, people, and all other living things were destroyed, leaving just the occupants of the ark to repopulate the globe; so will be in the last days.

Luke 21:25-26

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.  People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. ”

Now, here is my explanation on why I believe that this perceived increase in weather disaster  should be viewed and observed through the lenses of Global Warnings not Global Warming.  This current weather turmoil should be a reminder to us, that God will not sit idly by and watch this world go into a freefall of moral decay without His intervention.

We now live in a time when behaviors that are most abhorrent to the Lord are being normalized as being natural.  Gay marriage is now sweeping the world, and is being accepted and propelled as a normal lifestyle. The U.S. Supreme Court has legalized same sex marriage under the civil rights title, and our President celebrated this ruling with a rainbow display on the White House. History will show, that this very date that the Supreme Court announced the ruling, was. one of great  significance in the history of the United States and the world. On that date, our President stood in his seat of secular power and praised the same-sex marriage ruling, giving the proclamation his complete and unequivocal support. A few hours later, the AME Church’s Bishop turned over the pulpit to the President  to preach at the funeral of a pastor who had been brutally killed along with other members of his congregation. It was a painful time for our country, and the people were hungry for a healing Word. Every major U.S. News network and even international news feeds carried both the same sex marriage press conference and the funeral events live on this highly unusual day.  The President took the pulpit, relinquished to him by the bishop, and used it to preached  a form of gospel that was mixed political themes. He had the world in rapt attention as his stage, and he performed for them, giving the crowd what their itching ears wanted to hear. Then he left that funeral, went back to Washington and lit up the White House, the people’s house, in the pirated colors of the rainbow. I believe the events on that day, were significant in the spiritual realm. Many adoring fans of the President were mesmerized by him on that day as they became convinced that the legalization of same-sex marriage was the right thing to do. People updated their social media statuses with the rainbow insignia along with the slogan, “Love Wins”! How could it not be love? After all, it is supported by a leader who is the most successful civil rights promoter of the present time.  Many were caught up by his preaching in the AME Church’s pulpit and the climatic singing of ‘Amazing Grace’ at the end. It was indeed mesmerizing!  The masses now see him as a godsend and will accept everything he says,and approve and support all his policies.

For the first time in known history, the legalization of gay marriage was approved by a populous vote. This happened in Ireland, and the result was a landslide. A landslide in a country that most thought could not happen; a country that is known for her strict conservative Catholic values. There are now gay parades in Israel, the Holy Land, on an annual basis. Jamaica has had the strongest stance against the normalization of the gay lifestyle in this hemisphere. However, that is now changing rapidly. The gay society just had a parade on Emancipation Day, a special holiday set aside to commemorate the abolition of slavery.  Again,  this sinful lifestyle is trying to hitch a ride on the moral cause of the civil rights movement in order, to launch their immoral behavioral preferences.  We are now seeing the confusing acceptance of other sexual titles in Western societies. Provisions and laws are being passed to accommodate sexual categories such as: bisexuals, asexual, transsexuals. Who know what other categories will be introduced!

The ill effects of pornography on society is not even being considered anymore.  It is now freely and readily accessible on the internet and social media.  In other words, one don’t have to go searching for it anymore.  It just pops up on whatever media device you are on, oftentimes in the form of commercial.  Marriage among heterosexual are on the decline. The shacking-up lifestyle is now the new norm for this new generation.  This new form of the modern family is so deliberate, the practice of giving children two last names, both the father’s and the Mother’s, has become more popular.  This is so because the father and mother are not one in Holy Matrimony, they each vie to have the child symbolically identified as theirs, separately. 

Abortion, and the purposeful killing of the most innocent among us, is a legal practice in many developed countries. Recently, the biggest promoter of pro-choice, Planned Parenthood, was exposed in its practice of harvesting the body parts of the aborted babies for sale. They were so entrenched in their practice of organ harvesting that they have now established market pricing for the different body parts! Nations are adopting the abortion practice as a means to reduce crimes. Yes, that statement is correct! I recently listened to a member of the Jamaican parliament, who gave a speech on the legalization of abortion on the island nation. She said that data in the states of America, that legalized abortion, has shown a significant reduction in crime. She believes that by promoting abortion for low income, single, pregnant women, would prevent a potential criminal from becoming a reality. Unimaginable!

Nations are discussing the viability of the elderly, handicapped, and the terminally ill, whether it’s financially sound to prolong their lives. Some countries have gone as far as to legalize and encourage euthanasia.  A clause to stop the care of the elderly was quietly included in the national healthcare bill in the United States.  This death clause was one of the necessary additions for the new healthcare bill to be financially viable.  It was taken out after there was an uproar, spearheaded by the evangelical community.

Prayers were taken out of school and is completely eradicated from the learning institutions throughout the nations. Even the proven truth of Biblical history is not taught any more.  We are now raising the most ungodly generation of all time. A generation whose value standards are influenced by the internet and its many false publishers.  The  poor, on up to the lower middle class, is becoming more and more dependent on the government to sustain and supply their needs. This dependence on government results in a greater, ballooning sector of society that is beholden to government standards rather than the Church’s, the custodian of God Holy word and decrees.

Then there is the most devastating tragedy of all that is added to all this evil expanding throughout society: The Church is increasingly operating in the same fiduciary manner as the world.  The Church, in too many cases, has become a house of profit and gluttony, while they ignore the lost, the poor, the widowed and the orphans. Many false teachers are raising up mega-churches and teaching a form of gospel that is not the one handed down to us by the true eyewitnesses, the disciples, who walked with our Lord during His time on earth.  Many churches have now bought into the slogan “Love Wins!”, instead of teaching the truth, that any behavior outside of God’s holy standards is not love and will summarily lead to condemnation and destruction.

News of wars and the rumors of wars, have become common and standard reports by the media. The different elements about these wars is that they are fueled by ideological beliefs. The result of this type of war? Endless blood shed, as there are no political or diplomatic solutions to agree on. Then we have the twenty four hours per day media  and social network, piping all the horrors of these wars throughout the world, into the minds and psyches of the young. The result is a generation who has gotten desensitized to evil. The practice of beheadings and burning people alive is only a mesmerizing click away for all to view.

Matthew 24:3-8

As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.  For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many.  You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.  Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Is it possible that we are now experiencing the birth pains?  Well, I don’t know. However I do know of this statement from our Lord: “When these things are happening, we should look up because our redemption draws near.”

Isn’t it ironic that the people who are crying and shouting Global Warming, are the same people who champion the implementation of all these immoralities into society.  They are the progressive movement and social engineering zealots who pushed and supported  the immoral and ungodly social standards. These are the same evil that has been made known throughout Scripture. The kind of evil that aroused the anger of our Lord!  We have read throughòut Biblical històry, how God had stirred up the weather and other natural disasters to rid the world of these sinful ways.  In other words, the social zealots are defying God’s holy word, and practicing what is an abomination to our Lord. Then they run through and about the globe, making unsubstantiated claims that the world is in grave danger because of the polluting actions of man. They are oblivious to the spiritual carnage and destruction that is being manifested in the physical. All of which is the result of the their social engineering practices.

These foolish progressive movement people run around saying they are champions of the environment.  They have taken a strong, and sometimes, combative stance against those whom they accuse of not caring for the environment. This could be just the distraction the devil wants. Satan’s goal is to lead God’s people astray when the end-time signs are evident.  Distract them from knowing the true reasons for the impending natural disasters, Distract them from what the Bible has already prophesied will happen. Many will turn and accuse their fellow man, believing that these zealots were right when they say: “it is the capitalistic ways of man that is the cause of the weather turmoil.”  Their anger against capitalism will be so convincing, that they will miss the true reasons for the unusual weather conditions that have come upon the world. All will forget the prophesy of Christ, when He imparted these words as record in the Gospels:

Luke 21:25-28 NIV

“There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.  People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.  At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.  When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

How many will remember the words of our Lord, for us to ‘lift up our heads’?  I am afraid, because of the rhetoric being spewed by many, including the world leaders amongst us, that many will turn to others in search of who is to blame. People will probably run around with accusations as to who is at fault. They will surely miss the message that it is the great sins of man that is causing the manifestation of these events.  The very people who normalized the immoral practices and increase the sins on the globe, these same people will be the ones who will mislead people regarding the true cause of the coming disastrous weather and unusual natural events.  They will cause the masses to miss or reject the prophetic words of Christ Jesus as recorded in the Gospels.

2 Peter 1:16

For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

So my advice to the Church: do not get caught up in the Global Warming rhetoric.  We do know that catastrophic weather changes will happen.  Whether the physical workings of man, such as pollution, will play a part in the cause of the impending natural disasters is certainly debatable.  However, the Church should not lose sight that all is caused  by man’s sinful nature.  Sins of a spiritual nature will manifest in physical form, to be a sign for those who operate in the natural world without the spiritual knowledge of Christ.

The Church knows, and should prepare the people that the real issue here is not Global Warming.  The true message is Global Warnings.  The Warnings that man will eventually have to come into the direct presence of the True and Just God.  And make account for his actions.
