As Christians, we need to protect ourselves from the evil things of the world. It is easy to say when these things are clearly evil, but we are often fooled by the things that are masked by “what we like”.
We are brainwashed by our movies and our music no matter how much we say that we can detect it’s evil. We have become numb to profanity, violence, and sexual immorality and these factors of “entertainment” has contributed to that. In this time, music, movies, and social media take up a great deal of our time; spending large amounts of time on anything WILL have an impact. It’s sad to see that a large amount of famous music that promotes immoral things are so willingly endorsed by many Christians. It is not a bad thing to listen to secular music; however, it is a bad thing to listen to immoral music.
Sometimes we are so caught up in our love of an artist’s talent that we are blind to negative impact he or she has on us. For example, Beyonce’s song “Drunk in Love” is a crowd favorite. Everybody knows that song. We’ve all sung it at some point. It’s catchy, the rhythm is nice, it talks explicitly about sex, but she has an amazing voice, right? It’s easy to ignore that third point; however, it is crucial that we don’t. We cannot deny that this song has had an impact on this society. You can even buy t-shirts and phones cases with these lyrics. Sadly, it was a negative impact. Another example, in Kanye West’s new album, he mentions a line about Taylor Swift: “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex…I made that b**** famous.” Many people are defending Kanye! These people, including Christians, are saying that others are overreacting about the statement, because it was simply a joke. A disgusting comment like that is”okay” and “not that bad” because it was merely a joke.
These kind of inacceptable excuses are being made all because people like his artistry. We need to open our eyes to the what we don’t know is controlling our lives. We can hope all we want that we were are just enjoying the musical quality and not the lyrics, but we know that that is not the case. Clean versions of songs may remove the profanity but not the sexual immorality or violent behavior that the artist implied. How many of us still cringe at the sound of profanity as much as we did as children? Very few. This is because we are used to hearing it so much, even if we aren’t the ones using them. This proves how much we are affected by the things around us. It is so important that we ask God to give us wisdom and a spirit of discernment. We need to pray for ourselves and for our brothers and sisters in Christ that we are not fooled and led astray. We must also pray for our nation and those who aren’t Christians that God will open their eyes and use us to make a difference in their lives and lead them to Jesus.
I think about that song that many us Christians learned as children: ” Be careful little eyes what you see…because little ears what you hear”. It’s something we must live by.

I love this! It’s very well written and brings up great points on how entertainment effects each of us, as well as this generations tendency to absolve someone famous of all their wrongdoing just because we might like what they create. It’s good to show discrepancy and be careful of the kind of influences we allow in our lives.
