Human…Or Not?

Often times when I am debating the issue of abortion with someone who is pro-Choice, I am usually challenged with their signature, defensive talking points.  The three most common of these talking points are as follow:  1. The unborn child is nothing more than a fetus or mass of developing cells.  The fetus is not a living, conscious being.  2.  It’s the woman’s body and she can do what she wants and as she pleases.  3.  For those of us who are Christians and pro-choice, we love to clear our conscience with this line; nowhere in the Bible does it say abortion is a sin unto God.  Really? Let’s look deeper!  I am going to lay out a few passages from Scripture refuting the above three claims.  Most of those with whom I have had the opportunity to debate the issue of abortion are Christians.  So, what better media source is there to consult than the Bible, especially since this article is directed at Christians who support abortion.

“Did not He who made me in the womb make them?”
“Did not the same One form us both within our mothers?” (Job 31:15
NIV)

God is our maker.  Every person that ever lived from the beginning of time, both born and unborn, is a unique soul created in the image of God Himself.  That bundle of cells we so conveniently labeled a fetus, is a person known to God from before time, set apart for a special purpose as ordered by the Father Himself.  That bundle of cells carries a uniquely designed DNA of Devine origins.  Psalm 139:13 declares:

“For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.”

Before I was born, the Lord called me; from my mother’s womb He has spoken my name. (Isaiah 49:1 NIV)

Each and every one of us has a special calling.  The call is preordained by our Lord, Proverbs 20:24 says, “A person’s steps are directed by the Lord.  How then can anyone understand their own way?”  Just imagine, God knew you by name from the time you were in your mother’s womb.  How could another person destroy God’s plan? Who authorizes us to make such a decision?

“Surely, I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Yet You desired faithfulness even in the womb; You taught me wisdom in that secret place. (Psalm 51:5, 6 NIV)

The Bible says that we are all sinners.  Psalm 51 made it clear that we are sinners from the point of conception.  How profound a statement is this?  Can a clump of lifeless cells be called a sinner?  Isn’t it clear to all our understanding that if you are a sinner, it means that you must be a person and have a soul? How can a “fetus” be taught wisdom if it is not yet a person?  How much of Scripture are we willing to ignore while we carry on with this crippling and deadly practice?

“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:19, 20 NIV)

As I indicated earlier, this article is directed at Christians.  This is important because the above passage, as stated by the Apostle Paul, is directed at the Church.  The passage clearly states; “You are not your own; you were bought at a price”.  When we accept Jesus as our Savior, He takes on our sinfulness, which He paid for at the cross.  Because you now belong to Jesus, He has fulfilled His promise of sending to you the Comforter.  The Comforter resides in you; Yes, your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.  Therefore, your bodies are for the Kingdom of God.  Don’t get mad at me, I didn’t say it, Scripture did!

“When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. In a loud voice she exclaimed, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the Child you will bear! But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her!” (Luke 1:41-45 NIV)

Oh, the joy, comfort and security of a child in the womb.  The child in the womb shares the experiences of the mother.  The unborn child has emotions, feelings and is sensitive to the surroundings.  This passage clearly show a state of consciousness that is unquestionably human.  Take a moment and imagine the horror of an abortion, both for the child and the mother.

It is clearly shown and demonstrated throughout Scripture that the unborn child is a person at the moment of conception.  Yes, a person known by God before time, a person that is a part of God’s Divine plan and purpose for His kingdom.  There are many reasons that are given to justify the necessity for abortion.   The pro-choice stance is plain and simple:  the proponents want to set the moral standards of which child deserve to live outside the womb.  The elimination of the unborn could very well be determined by social, economic or even the degree of inconvenience for the mother and father.  Ok, I can hear the “compassionate” voices crying out against me and my “insensitive” stance; the “compassionate” voices will say; what about in the cases of rape, incest and when the woman’s life is in danger?  I will first answer the question with a question.  Honestly now, how many of the estimated 75 million+ babies aborted over the past 35 years were done because of rape, incest or the woman’s endangerment?  I am not in the position to determine exactly how a woman is affected in these cases, but I do hope she would seek the will God has for her life and that of the baby before deciding. In the midst of her pain and agony, I sure hope the life of the “innocent” child would be the choice in all cases.  God will see the sacrifice of the parents, and it’s from Him that all blessings flow. Remember, adoption is a loving option!

Mother and child, the One who created them both, knows their situation, understands their situation and will not give them more than they can manage.  Put your cares and hopes in the Living God, and He will see you through all situation. Not some, not just the planned, pleasant, or promised ones…all circumstances!  Give every child that chance to sing this praise onto the Lord: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14)

In His Service,
